Solid Void Liquid Earth
When a tree is overturned, a portal opens. A connection between the air and the underworld. Cleansing light. Deep oily pools. A connection between the present and the past.
Solid Void Liquid Earth is an exhibition of silicone casts of the voids left by rocks taken from the root balls of overturned trees. The silicone has leached into the sandy soil and documented the grooves and impact of the extracted rocks, picking up traces of soil and sand. Simmons created this work while on residency in Finland, within the 10 000 year old Paljakka forest.
This exhibition was generously funded by the Ontario Arts Council’s Exhibition Assistance grant.
